Local Spotlight: Meet Gracie, Babson College’s Community Resource Dog

Spreading Joy, One Wag at a Time!

By Kate Shamon Rushford March 26, 2025

At Babson College, there’s a special four-legged friend bringing joy and comfort to students, staff, and visitors alike. Meet Officer Gracie, a lovable 1-year-old Goldador (a Labrador and Golden Retriever mix) who serves as the school’s Community Resource Dog. We had the chance to chat with Gracie (with a little help from her handler Nashley) to learn more about her life on campus, her favorite treats, and what makes her such a great friend to everyone she meets!

Getting to Know Gracie

Hi Gracie! Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Hi friends! My name is Gracie, and I am a Community Resource Dog for Babson College. My job is to support the social and emotional well-being of students, staff, faculty, and visitors on campus. I love meeting new people, offering comfort, and making everyone feel a little happier!

A Day in the Life of a Community Resource Dog

What’s your favorite part of being Babson College’s Community Resource Dog?
The best part of my job is making people smile! I love when someone pets me and starts to relax or when I can sit quietly with someone who needs a friend. Sometimes people hug me or tell me their worries, and I just listen. I don’t need to do tricks—I just show up with my wagging tail and big heart. Oh, and the daily treats are a nice bonus!

How do you help students feel happy and less stressed?
Through my training, I’ve learned how to provide affection and comfort to everyone I meet. I’m also trained in pressure therapy, a calming technique where I apply gentle pressure—like a weighted blanket—to help soothe students who might be feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

What does a typical day on campus look like for you?
I usually start my day at Babson Public Safety, playing with my best friend, Roger, Babson’s first Community Resource Dog. Then, I visit different spots on campus like the Student Life Suite, Admissions Office, and Reynolds Campus Center to greet students, faculty, and staff. No two days are the same, which makes my job extra fun!

Gracie’s Favorites

Do you have a favorite place to visit in Wellesley?
Definitely the drive-thru at Dunkin’—I get super excited because I know a munchkin or a pup cup is coming my way!

We hear you have a special vest. What does it mean when you’re wearing it?
When my handler puts my vest on, I know it’s time to work. It means I’m either heading to training or going out to meet people in the community. But when my vest comes off, it’s playtime!

What are your favorite treats and toys?
I love freeze-dried chicken and hot dogs, but my absolute favorite is a beef marrow bone after a long workday. As for toys, I adore my soft plush doggie toy—it’s like my own little cuddle buddy that never runs out of snuggles!

Life Beyond Work

Do you ever get time off? What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Yes! I work on a rotating schedule, so my days off change each week. When I’m not working, I love being outside—whether it’s going for a long walk, playing in the snow, or taking a swim. My first time playing in the snow and swimming were some of my happiest moments!

What’s the best way for students (or kids) to say hello to dogs
My handler always reminds people to ask before petting me. Some working dogs, like service dogs, have to stay focused on their tasks, but since I’m a Community Resource Dog, my job is to bring comfort and joy.

If you could give one piece of advice about being a good friend, what would it be?
My handler always says that I love to give—whether it’s cuddles, loyalty, or protection. Being a good friend means showing kindness, offering support, and making others feel safe and valued. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference!
